Disrespectful Behavior Kills Productivity And Happiness In the Workplace

According to Dr. Christine Porath’s article on Quartz:

“Stress stemming from incivility can silently kill productivity—and people. Those who unleash on others, belittle subordinates or undermine colleagues may leave a wake and create ripple effects:

  • 80 % lost work time worrying about an uncivil incident.
  • 63% lost work time in their effort to avoid the offender.

Incivility can deplete immune systems, causing cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and ulcers.”

Her study shows that:

  • “In three experimental studies, we found that witnessing rudeness enacted by an authority figure and a peer reduced observers’ performance on routine tasks as well as creative tasks. In all three studies we also found that witnessing rudeness decreased citizenship behaviors and increased dysfunctional ideation. Rude behavior decreased helpfulness.”
  • “Even if people who experience or witness incivility want to perform well, they can’t. Of those treated poorly 12% said they had left their job because of the uncivil treatment. Yet those who quit in response to incivility typically don’t tell their employers why.”
  • Christine Porath reminds that witnessing negative interactions causes generalizations about the company and gives Uber as an example and how many customers have declared their decisions to turn to competitors after the employee complaints about the company.

“Leaders need to correct bad behavior swiftly,” she adds, suggesting a dialogue about what company norms should be and the necessity of holding managers and colleagues accountable for living up to those norms of civility.
