Road Traffic Accident Statistics, 2019 in Turkey

In the road network of Turkey, 1 million 168 thousand 144 traffic accidents occurred in total during year 2019. Among all those accidents 993 thousand 248 accidents were with material loss and 174 thousand 896 were with death or injury. For the accidents involving death or injury, 75.9% of them occurred at inhabited area and 24.1% occurred at uninhabited area.

5 thousand 473 persons were killed and 283 thousand 234 persons were injured  

As a result of 174 thousand 896 accidents involving death or injury occurred in Turkey during year 2019, 2 thousand 524 people were killed at accident scene and 2 thousand 949 people who were injured at traffic accident and sent to health facilities died within 30 days after the accident due to related accident and its impacts. 47.5% of deaths and 68.1% of injuries occurred at inhabited area whereas 52.5% of deaths and 31.9% of injuries occurred at uninhabited area.

Number of persons killed decreased by 18.0% compared to previous year

In Turkey by year 2019 while total road motor vehicles in traffic increased by 1.3%, whereas there were decreases in total accidents by 5.0%, accidents involving death or injury by 6.2%, accidents with material loss by 4.8%, total number of persons killed by 18.0%, persons killed at accident scene by 25.1%, persons killed at accient follow-up by 10.8% and injuries by 7.8%.

In Turkey 7.6 accidents involving death or injury occurred per thousand vehicles

When number of accidents involving death or injury are analysed by provinces, accidents per thousand road motor vehicles occurred most at Bingöl and least at İstanbul.

42.7% of the persons killed in traffic accidents were drivers

Among the persons killed in the accidents occurred in the road network of Turkey during year 2019, 42.7% of them were drivers, 34.1% were passengers and 23.2% were pedestrians. Concerning the gender breakdown of persons killed 76.2% of them were men and 23.8% were women; whereas for the persons injured 67.2% of them were men and 32.8% were women.

Driver faults were the primary fault causing traffic accidents with 88.0% share 

Looking at the 204 thousand 538 total faults causing accidents involving death or injury in Turkey during year 2019, it was observed that 88.0% of faults were driver faults, 8.2% were pedestrian faults, 2.0% were vehicle faults, 1.3% were passenger faults and 0.5% were road faults.

67.8% of accidents involving death or injury occurred at day time

Concerning the 174 thousand 896 accidents involving death or injury occurred in the road network of Turkey, 67.8% of accidents occurred at day, 29.4% occurred at night and 2.8% occurred at twilight.

47.5% of accidents involving death or injury were two vehicle accidents

When accidents involving death or injury and their results are examined by number of vehicles involved, 46.6% of those accidents were single vehicle accidents, 47.5% were two vehicle accidents and 5.9% were multi vehicle accidents. Within total number of persons killed at accidents, 56.8% were at single vehicle accidents, 37.3% were two vehicle accidents and 5.9% were multi vehicle accidents. Regarding number of persons injured, 43.1% of them were at single vehicle accidents, 49.8% of them were at two vehicle accidents and %7.1 of them were at multi vehicle accidents.

280 thousand 700 vehicles were involved in accidents with death or injury

In Turkey, the distribution of 280 thousand 700 road motor vehicles involved in accidents with death or injury was cars 53.1%, motorcycles 16.3%, small trucks 14.9%, minibuses 3.0%, trucks 2.3%, buses 2.2%, tractor truck 2.1%, tractors 1.0% and the other vehicles 5.2% during year 2019.

Accidents involving death or injury occurred most in August least in February

In Turkey by year 2019 looking at the monthly distribution of 174 thousand 896 accidents involving death or injury, accidents most frequently occurred in August with 10.5% share whereas accidents least frequently occurred in February with 5.8% share. Regarding the distribution among the days of the week, accidents involving death or injury most frequently occurred on Fridays with 14.8% share and least frequently on Wednesdays with 13.9% share.

EXPLANATIONS

Data of road traffic accidents are compiled from the administrative records of General Directorate of Public Security (GDPS) and General Command of Gendarmerie (GCG) and published annually by Turkish  Statistical Institute (TurkStat) according to Official Statistical Programme (OSP). The accidents with material loss which are documented by people involved in accidents are also included to total number of accidents.

Until year 2015 the number of persons killed in road traffic accident statistics included the deaths only at accident scene. As the work carried out to harmonise the statistics of persons killed at road traffic accidents with the international definitions has been completed in coordination with General Directorate of Public Security, General Command of Gendarmerie, Ministry of Health and Turkish Statistical Institute; statistics on the people who were injured at road traffic accidents and sent to health facilities who died within 30 days after the accident due to related accident and its impacts are included in the statistics and submitted to users since 2015.
