Employment index including industry, construction, trade-services sectors in Turkey decreased by 2.7% in the second quarter of 2020

Labour Input Indices, Quarter II: April-June, 2020 in Turkey

Employment index including industry, construction, trade-services sectors decreased by 2.7% in the second quarter of 2020 compared with the same quarter of the previous year. When sub-sectors are examined; industrial sector increased by 1.5%, construction sector decreased by 9.0% and trade-services sector decreased by 4.0%.

Hours worked index decreased by 29.3% annually

Hours worked index including industry, construction, trade-services sectors decreased by 29.3% in the second quarter of 2020 compared with the same quarter of the previous year. When sub-sectors are examined; industrial sector decreased by 26.7%, construction sector decreased by 25.4% and trade-services sector decreased by 31.4%.

Gross wages-salaries index decreased by 8.4% annually

Gross wages-salaries index including industry, construction, trade-services sectors decreased by 8.4% in the second quarter of 2020 compared with the same quarter of the previous year. When sub-sectors are examined; industrial sector decreased by 5.2%, construction sector decreased by 8.6% and trade-services sector decreased by 10.5%.

Employment index decreased by 4.4% in the second quarter of 2020 compared with the previous quarter. When sub-sectors are examined; industrial sector decreased by 2.4%, construction sector decreased by 3.0% and trade-services sector decreased by 5.9%.

Hours worked index decreased by 28.6% quarterly

Hours worked index decreased by 28.6% in the second quarter of 2020 compared with the previous quarter. When sub-sectors are examined; industrial sector decreased by 28.8%, construction sector decreased by 19.7% and trade-services sector decreased by 30.0%.

Gross wages-salaries index decreased by 18.4% quarterly

Gross wages-salaries index decreased by 18.4% in the second quarter of 2020 compared with the previous quarter. When sub-sectors are examined; industrial sector decreased by 16.5%, construction sector decreased by 13.0% and trade-services sector decreased by 20.3%.

Hourly labour cost index increased by 28.1% annually

Hourly labour cost index including industry, construction, trade-services sectors increased by 28.1% in the second quarter of 2020 compared with the same quarter of the previous year. When sub-sectors are examined; industrial sector increased by 27.9%, construction sector increased by 20.7% and trade-services sector increased by 29.2%.

Hourly earnings index increased by 29.5% annually

Hourly earnings index including industry, construction, trade-services sectors increased by 29.5% in the second quarter of 2020 compared with the same quarter of the previous year. When sub-sectors are examined; industrial sector increased by 29.4%, construction sector increased by 22.5% and trade-services sector increased by 30.5%.

Hourly labour cost excluding earnings index increased by 20.5% annually

Hourly labour cost excluding earnings index including industry, construction, trade and services sectors increased 20.5% in the second quarter of 2020 compared with the same quarter of the previous year. When sub-sectors are examined; industrial sector increased by 19.9%, construction sector increased by 12.0% and trade-services sector increased by 22.2%.

Hourly labour cost index increased by 13.6% quarterly

Hourly labour cost index increased by 13.6% in the second quarter of 2020 compared with the previous quarter. When sub-sectors are examined; industrial sector increased by 16.7%, construction sector increased by 7.0% and trade-services sector increased by 13.2%.

Hourly earnings index increased by 14.3% quarterly

Hourly earnings index increased by 14.3% in the second quarter of 2020 compared with the previous quarter. When sub-sectors are examined; industrial sector increased by 17.3%, construction sector increased by 8.3% and trade-services sector increased by 13.9%.

Hourly labour cost excluding earnings index increased by 9.7% quarterly

Hourly labour cost excluding earnings index increased by 9.7% in the second quarter of 2020 compared with the previous quarter. When sub-sectors are examined; industrial sector increased by 13.5%, construction sector increased by 0.9% and trade-services sector increased by 9.2%.

EXPLANATIONS

Calendar effect has not been observed in employment and gross wages-salaries index. Therefore, unadjusted series
are used instead of calendar adjusted series.

Annual changes refer to the changes of calendar adjusted index values compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

Quarterly changes refer to the changes of seasonally and calendar adjusted index values compared to the previous quarter.

While employees working within the scope of short-time employment allowance due to the pandemic are included in the employment, payments made by the public authority to these employees are not included in the gross wage-salary calculations according to the methodology.
