U.S. sanctions hit Persian rugs

New sanctions on Iran from the U.S caused the carpet exports to decrease.

 

Abdullah Bahrami from the semi-official Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA) said in a report that 35 percent of Iran’s carpet exports were made to the U.S.

Iranian Industry Ministry estimates 400 tons of hand-woven carpet production annually.

 

The rug industry employs around 2.5 million people in the country.

The head of Iranian National Carpet Center, Firiste Destpaki stated ‘’Iran earns some $400 million through hand-woven carpets’’.

 

He also said that Iranian exporters hope to compensate fort his loss by exporting more rugs to Russia, China and South Africa.
