Some 2 million tons of waste recycled in Turkey

According to the news of Hürriyet Daily News, Turkey recycled some 2 million tons of waste, including plastics, glass and tires last year, according to data state-run Anadolu Agency compiled.

Data showed that 730 tons of waste batteries, some 178,00 tons of waste tires and 484, 000 tons of plastic were recycled in 2019.

The recycled materials also included some 234,000 tons of glass and 821,000 tons of packaging waste.

The Portable Battery Exporters’ and Importers’ Association (TAP) is the sole organization that was authorized by the Environment and Urban Planning Ministry to collect, transport and dispose waste batteries.

The association, which has been active since 2004, collects such batteries from post offices, schools, universities, organized industrial zones, mosques and supermarkets.

As a result of such efforts, 752 tons of waste batteries were collected in 2018, whereas the corresponding figure was 730 tons in 2019.

The Tire Industrialists’ Association (LASDER) leads activities in coordination with the ministry in collecting waste tires.

Back in 2018, LASDER retrieved more than 200,000 tons of tires which completed their life cycles.

Last year the amount collected was 177,611 tons, according to the data.

In 2019, municipalities gathered 1.8 million tons of packaging waste. Accordingly, 484,000 tons of plastic packaging, around 234,000 tons of glass packaging and 821,000 tons of paper packaging waste were recycled.

Mining establishments abstracted 249 million m³of water

According to the results of Mining Establishments Water, Wastewater and Waste Statistics Survey, mining establishments abstracted 249 million m³of water. Out of this amount, 51.2% was abstracted from well, 22.3% from sea and spring, 10.4% from mine water, 4% from river, 3.7% from lake-artificial lake and 8.4% from other resources.

Mining establishments discharged 161 million m³of wastewater

Out of 161 million m³of wastewater discharged by mining establishments in 2018, 83.3% was discharged to sea, lake or river, 7.8% to tailing dam, 1.4% to mine, 1.2% to septic tank, 1% onto land and 5.3% to other receiving bodies.

Mining establishments treated 14 million m³of wastewater

Mining establishments treated 14 million m³of wastewater in 2018. 88.9% of this amount was treated in physical or chemical treatment plants, whereas 11.1% was treated in biological treatment plants. Out of 14 million m³of wastewater treated in wastewater treatment plants, 54.2% was discharged, whereas 45.8% was recycled within mining establishments.

Mining establishments generated 17 million tonnes of waste, excluding overburden

Mining establishments generated 812 million tonnes of waste, of which 99.9% was mineral waste. 97.9% of mineral waste was overburden. Out of total amount of waste, 71.2% was disposed of in heaps for overburden, tailing dam or controlled landfill site, 26.2% was used for backfilling and 2.6% was recovered or disposed of by other methods.

EXPLANATIONS

The scope of Mining Establishments Water, Wastewater and Waste Statistics Survey was mining establishments, which submitted production data for the year before the reference year to General Directorate of Mining and Petroleum Affairs or had a new licence for the reference year. Establishments dealing only with enrichment processes was out of scope.
