The overall export unit value index increased by 1.1%

As compared with the corresponding month of the preceding year, the overall export unit value index increased by 1.1% in April. In the same month, compared to April 2022, while the index for food, beverages and tobacco, and manufactured goods (except food, beverages and tobacco) increased by 7.5%and 3.4%, respectively, the index for crude materials (except fuels)and fuels decreased by 10.8% and 24.3%, respectively.

The overall export volume index decreased by 18.1%

The overall export volume index compared to the corresponding month of the preceding year decreased by 18.1% in April. Compared with April 2022, while the index for fuels increased by 0.8%, the index for food, beverages and tobacco, crude materials (except fuels) and manufactured goods (except food, beverages and tobacco) decreased by 13.5%, 6.6% and 21.2%, respectively.

The overall import unit value index decreased by 16.7%

As compared with the corresponding month of the preceding year, the overall import unit value index decreased by 16.7% in April. The index for food, beverages and tobacco, crude materials (except fuels), fuels and manufactured goods (except food, beverages and tobacco) decreased by 9.6%, 19.6%, 44.4% and 5.2%, respectively.

The overall import volume index increased by 14.3%

In April, the overall import volume index compared to the corresponding month of the preceding year increased by 14.3%. While the index for crude materials (except fuels) decreased by 14.4%, the index for food, beverages and tobacco, fuels and manufactured goods (except food, beverages and tobacco) increased by 30.5%, 14.5% and 13.9%, respectively.

On a calendar and seasonally adjusted basis, German exports to countries outside the European Union (third countries) declined by 5.7% in April 2023 compared with March 2023. According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), Germany exported goods to the value of 56.5 billion euros in April 2023, after calendar and seasonal adjustment.

In the Eastern Black Sea Region, exports from Trabzon, Rize, Artvin and Gümüşhane provinces amounted to 510 million 44 thousand 95 dollars in the January-April period of 2023. There was a 10% increase in exports compared to the previous year. In the first 4 months of 2023, the exports from our region; 413 Million 156 Thousand 554 dollars were realized from Trabzon, 60 Million 643 thousand 307 dollars from Rize, 22 Million 669 thousand 338 dollars from Artvin and 13 Million 574 thousand 895 dollars from Gümüşhane. Compared to the 4-month period of the previous year, exports from the provinces of the region increased by 25 percent in exports from Trabzon and 5 percent in exports from Artvin. Due to the decrease in the export of mining products, there is a 32 percent decrease in the exports from Rize and a 44 percent decrease in the exports from Gümüşhane.

In the first 4 months of 2023, the sectors with the highest exports from the Eastern Black Sea Region Trabzon, Rize, Artvin and Gümüşhane provinces;

Fresh Fruits and Vegetables with 87 Million 527 thousand 932 dollars,
Fisheries and Livestock Products with 54 Million 223 thousand 16 Dollars,

Vehicles and Sub-Industry with 12 million 377 thousand 663 dollars

In the January-April period of 2023, exports were made to 123 different countries from the Eastern Black Sea Region. The top 5 exporting countries were, respectively, the Russian Federation, Italy, Germany, Georgia and Poland. Our exports to the Russian Federation from these countries increased by 89 percent, our exports to Poland by 47 percent and our exports to Italy by 38 percent.

There has been a significant increase in exports to Morocco, Malaysia, TRNC and Egypt, and exports to 15 different countries, primarily Saudi Arabia, Myanmar (Burma) and Paraguay, were different from the same period of last year.

Exports of the Netherlands up by almost 6 percent in February

In February 2023, the total volume of goods exports was up by 5.8 percent year on year, as reported by Statistics Netherlands (CBS). The increase was mainly seen in exports of petroleum products, machinery and appliances, and transport equipment. The volume of goods imports was up by 3.7 percent relative to February 2022.

The CBS Exports Radar indicates that circumstances for exports in April are more favourable than in February.

Conditions for exports in April more favourable

Every month, CBS also publishes updates on the circumstances for exports in the Exports Radar. Conditions are largely determined by developments on the main export markets for Dutch domestic products and in the competitive position of the Netherlands. Although the Radar indicators show a strong correlation with export activity, improved circumstances are not necessarily translated into increased export growth.

According to the provisional data, produced with the cooperation of the Turkish Statistical Institute and the Ministry of Trade, in February 2023; while exports were 18 billion 635 million dollars with a 6.4% decrease, imports were 30 billion 714 million dollars with a 10.1% increase compared with February 2022.

In January-February 2023 period, exports were 37 billion 992 million dollars with a 1.4% increase and imports were 64 billion 320 million dollars with a 15.4% increase compared with January-February 2022.

The ratio of the first five countries in total exports was 30.9% in February 2023.

The ratio of first five countries in total imports was 45.9% in February 2023.

In January-February 2023 period, the top country for Türkiye’s imports was Russia with 9 billion 216 million dollars. The country was followed by Switzerland with 7 billion 863 million dollars, China with 6 billion 660 million dollars, Germany with 3 billion 888 million dollars, USA with 2 billion 296 million dollars. The ratio of first five countries in total imports was 46.5% in January-February 2023.

Seasonally and calendar adjusted exports decreased by 8.1%

The methodological application of the seasonal and calendar adjustment of the economic data was made because of the earthquake disaster. In the ‘Metadata’ section, the model table under the ‘Seasonal Adjustment’ heading contains details regarding the methodological application.

In February 2023, seasonally and calendar adjusted exports and imports decreased by 8.1%, 8.5% respectively compared with previous month. In February 2023, while calendar adjusted exports decreased by 6.4%, imports increased by 10.2% compared with February 2022.

Ratio of exports of high-tech products in manufacturing industries was 3.6%

Foreign trade by technology intensity covers the manufacturing industries’ products in classification of ISIC Rev.4. According to the ISIC Rev.4, the ratio of manufacturing industries products in total exports was 94.4% in February 2023. The ratio of high-technology products in manufacturing industries exports was 3.6%. The ratio of manufacturing industries products in total exports was 94.0% in January-February 2023. In January-February 2023 period, the ratio of high-technology products in manufacturing industries exports was 3.3%.

The ratio of manufacturing industries products in total imports was 77.1%. The ratio of high-technology products in manufacturing industries’ imports was 9.9% in February 2023. The ratio of manufacturing industries’ products in total imports was 75.2% in January-February 2023. The ratio of high-technology products in manufacturing industries’ imports was 9.9% in January-February 2023.

According to the special trade system, in February 2023, exports were 17 billion 58 million dollars with a 9.0% decrease and imports were 28 billion 905 million dollars with a 9.2% increase compared with February 2022.

In February 2023 foreign trade deficit was 11 billion 847 million dollars with a 53.4% increase compared with February 2022.

Exports coverage imports was 59.0%, while it was 70.8% in February 2022.

EXPLANATIONS

Foreign trade statistics are calculated according to two different trade systems, general trade system and special trade system.In the general trade system, goods entering and leaving the economic area of a country are covered. In this system, free zones, customs warehouses and goods entering or leaving the free circulation area, which constitute the economic area of the country, are included in the calculations.In the special trade system, customs warehouses and free zones are not included in the statistics, only goods entering and leaving the country’s free circulation area are covered.

In this context, in order to ensure consistency with economic statistics such as balance of payments and national accounts calculations, foreign trade statistics, which is produced by Turkish Statistical Institute in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade, have been published according to the general trade system in detail from January 2020. In addition, statistics according to the special trade system have been published in the press release and additional tables.

In January 2023, exports and imports of goods recorded nominal year-on-year rates of change of +14.5% and +10.3%, respectively (+9.5% and +9.2%, in the same order, in December 2022). These variations may reflect, in part, calendar effects, given that January 2023 had one more working day than the same month of 2022 and two more than last month.

Excluding Fuels and lubricants, there were increases of 14.3% in exports and 10.8% in imports (+7.0% and +8.1%, respectively, in December 2022).

The unit value indices (prices) recorded variations of +8.1% in exports and +7.0% in imports (+9.7% and +12.2%, respectively, in December 2022). Excluding petroleum products, the variations were +8.1% in exports and +5.9% in imports (+8.4% and +9.1%, in the same order, in December 2022).

The deficit of trade balance improved by EUR 27 million when compared to January 2022, amounting to EUR 1,963 million. Excluding Fuels and lubricants, the deficit amounted to EUR 1,325 million, decreasing by EUR 35 million when compared to January 2022.

In the quarter that ended in January 2023, exports and imports grew by 14.3% and 12.3%, respectively, when compared to the same period in 2022 (+16.2% and +17.4%, in the same order, in the 4th quarter of 2022).

Chinese imports to Canada surpassed $100 billion in 2022, establishing a new trade record

According to statistics from Statistics Canada, trade between China and Canada reached record highs in 2022, with imports breaking the $100 billion barrier for the first time.

According to economists and other experts, as demand rises and well-established supply networks reassert themselves in a post-pandemic world, businesses are looking past political tensions between the two nations.

James Brander, an economics professor at the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia, asserted that businesses would not put politics above profits in the absence of laws or regulations mandating it, such as the ones presently prohibiting trade with Russia.

Yes, there are conflicts, of course. However, unless there is a clear strategy, political tensions don’t have a significant impact on economic or trade flows, or economic activity in general, according to Brander.

According to Statistics Canada, Canada imported goods from China worth a high $100,027,968,000 last year, up 16% from $86 billion in 2021.

Consumer goods accounted for $31 billion of all imports in 2022, followed by electronic and electrical apparatus ($28 billion).

According to the data, Canadian exports to China hit a record high of $27.9 billion, recovering from a slump caused by the arrest of Chinese Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou in 2018 and China’s detention of Canadians Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig.

FOREIGN TRADE AND IMPORT PRICES OF ITALY- DECEMBER 2022

In December 2022 seasonally-adjusted data, compared to November 2022, decreased by -1.9% for outgoing flows and by -1.1% for incoming flows. Exports decreased by -1.2% for EU countries and by -2.6% for non-EU countries. Imports rose by +1.5% for EU countries and fell by -3.9% for non-EU countries.

Over the last three months, seasonally-adjusted data, compared to the previous three months, increased by +0.8% for exports and dropped by -6.6% for imports.

In December 2022, compared with the same month of the previous year, both exports and imports grew (+13.5% and +7.7% respectively). Outgoing flows increased by +8.6% for EU countries and by +18.2% for non-EU countries. Incoming flows rose by +4.5% for EU area and by +11.7% for non-EU area.

In the year 2022, compared to 2021, outgoing flows raised by +19.9% (+19.7% for EU countries and +20.2% for non EU countries) and incoming flows increased by +36.5% (22.8% for EU countries and +54.4% for non EU countries).

The trade balance in December 2022 amounted to +1,067 million Euros (-2,932 million Euros for EU countries and +4,000 million Euros for non-EU countries). In the year 2022, the trade balance registered a deficit of 31,011 million euro compared to the surplus of 40,334 million euro the year earlier; excluding energy, the surplus was equal to 80,267 million euro compared with a 88,690 million euro surplus in 2021.

In December 2022, import prices decreased by 1.6% on monthly basis (unchanged for the euro zone, -3.0% for the non-euro zone). Over the last three months, compared to the previous three months, import prices decreased by 1.6% (-0.3% for the euro zone, -2.7% for the non-euro zone).

Import prices, compared to the same month a year ago, increased by 11.3% in December 2022 (+7.7% for the euro zone, +14.9% for the non-euro zone). In 2022, compared with 2021, import prices rose by 18.5% (+10.2% for the euro zone, +26.4% for the non-euro zone).

Switzerland exports increased by 2.5% in January

According to data from the Federal Customs Administration, Switzerland’s exports rose for the second straight month in January as a result of high demand for chemical and pharmaceutical products.

After increasing by 5.6 percent the month before, exports increased by an actual 2.5 percent monthly in January.

After increasing by 0.3 percent in December, shipments increased by only 0.2 percent over the course of the month.

Both exports and imports saw net growth of 2.2 and 0.9 percent, respectively.

According to the agency, the 6.1 percent increase in the exports of chemical and pharmaceutical products was a major factor in the total increase in exports in January. Following that, shipments of precision tools rose by 4.0 percent.

However, a 13.1% decline in overseas demand for jewelry products significantly slowed the growth in exports.
